Family and Children Services Program provides a wide
variety of programs to children and families. Family Safety, Risk,
& Permanency Services are referred to First Resources
Corporation from the Department of Human Services. These services are
provided to families whose children are at risk of abuse due to issues
such as family violence, mental health, substance abuse, isolation,
poverty, etc. First Resources Care Coordinators work with families to
identify strengths, increase parenting skills, improve children's
behaviors, expand family network of resources, provide brief therapy,
supervision and increase family stability for preservation and
reunification. The Helping Hands Nurturing Program is a parenting
program for families with children 0-5 years of age who reside in
Jefferson or Keokuk Counties. This is a free program and is open to any
family regardless of income. Helping Hands Nurturing Program
is a twenty-two week course designed to assist parents and caregivers in
learning about age appropriate development, discipline, and their role
in preparing young children for school. The goal of Common Ground
is to increase involvement of non-custodial parents in their children's
lives. The program serves Mahaska, Wapello, Van Buren, Keokuk,
Washington and Jefferson counties. It is completely voluntary and there
is no cost for participants. First Resources Corporation will assist
non-custodial parents by identifying, developing and implementing plans
to help alleviate whatever obstacles prevent them from having meaningful
contact with their children. It is our goal to improve the quality of
life for children in these difficult situations. Youth Services-Life
Skills Group is designed to provide interpersonal skills
training and other competency development to youth in a small group
setting. Skills are taught in anger management, victim empathy,
relationship development, acceptance of responsibilities, and problem
solving. Groups focusing on alcohol and substance abuse as well as theft
diversion and anger management are available by Juvenile Court Officers
and Department of Human Services personnel through court ordered
services. Youth Services-Hispanic Life Skills is a program
awarded to First Resources Corporation by Juvenile Court Services for
the Eight Judicial District to provide Life Skills Services to Hispanic
youth, ages 12 to 17 who are at risk or who are already involved in the
juvenile justice system, and their families is adjusting to and
integrating into the community. Tracking and Monitoring Services
are offered to delinquent youth to maintain client accountability
through the assignment of staff members who check on clients to ensure
the child is where he or she is supposed to be. This is ascertained by
random phone calls or face to face contact. For youth who have exhibited
substance abuse problems, urinalysis or hair analysis may be performed.
This service may be obtained by contacting the local Juvenile Court
Office or First Resources Corporation. Remedial Services for
Children are provided by trained counselors to help eligible
children with behavior problems to function more successfully at home,
school and in the community. Title XIX eligible children under 18 years
of age who have been assessed by a licensed Practitioner of the Healing
Arts (LPHA) and are diagnosed with a psychological disorder are
eligible. Children may be referred by parents/guardians, physicians,
social workers, attorneys, JCO's, teachers, school counselors and other
community service providers.
